About Duration Counter

The Duration Counter finds the time between two dates and times. Give it a start and an end and it returns the gap in hours, minutes and seconds, plus the total in days, hours, minutes and seconds. It is the tool to reach for when you need to know how long something lasted, how much time passed between two events, or how long is left until a deadline.

Because it works with both dates and times, it handles gaps that cross midnight, weekends and months without you having to split the calculation by hand. A night shift, a journey, a project phase or a rental period can all be measured in one step.

How to use Duration Counter

  1. Enter the start date and time, or press “Set start to now”.
  2. Enter the end date and time, or press “Set end to now” — “Swap start / end” flips the two.
  3. Read the result: it updates live as you change either date and time.
  4. Read the duration in hours, minutes and seconds, and the totals in days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Why use Duration Counter

Counting durations by hand is easy to get wrong, especially across days and months. This tool does the calendar maths for you.

Common uses

Common uses include planning a trip from departure to arrival, measuring how long a project phase lasted, working out the length of an event or a shift, and checking the gap between two appointments. Teachers use it for lesson planning, managers for timelines, and anyone booking travel for working out overnight journeys that cross midnight.

Frequently asked questions

What if the end is before the start?

The result is shown as zero, and you can swap the dates to see the positive duration.

Can I measure a duration longer than a day?

Yes. The tool counts the full gap between the two dates, however many days it covers.

What if the end time is earlier than the start time?

The result is shown as zero for that combination. Swap the two values to see the positive duration.

Does it account for time zones?

No. Both dates and times are treated as you entered them, so use the same time zone for both if you are comparing events in different places.

Can I use it for work hours?

Yes, for a simple elapsed-time check. For payroll, also apply your own rules for breaks, overtime and rounding.
