About Negative Marks Calculator
The Negative Marks Calculator works out your final score in an exam where wrong answers lose marks. Enter the total questions, the maximum marks, how many questions you attempted and how many of those were wrong, then pick the negative marking ratio — and the tool shows your final score, the marks you earned, the marks deducted and your percentage. It is the tool to reach for after a mock test or an entrance exam, when you want to know where you stand before the official result.
Because the marks for one question come from your own totals, the same calculator works for any paper — a 100-question test worth 500 marks, a 200-question paper worth 800, or a short quiz. Questions you left unattempted score nothing: they add no marks and lose none.
How to use Negative Marks Calculator
- Enter the total questions and the maximum marks for the paper.
- Enter how many questions you attempted and how many were wrong.
- Pick the negative marking ratio — 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, a full mark, or none.
- Read your final score: it updates live as you change any value.
Why use Negative Marks Calculator
Working out a negatively marked score by hand is easy to get wrong, especially when the ratio is a fraction. This tool does the whole calculation for you.
- No manual maths — the marks per question, the deduction and the final score are worked out for you.
- See what wrong answers cost — the marks deducted are shown separately, so you can see how much negative marking changed your result.
- Any paper, any ratio — works for school tests, mock tests and competitive exams with any marking scheme.
Common uses
Common uses include checking a mock test score for entrance exams such as NEET, JEE, SSC, banking and UPSC papers, where wrong answers carry negative marks; working out a school or college test score; and comparing two attempts at the same paper to see which answering strategy scored higher.

Frequently asked questions
How is the final score calculated?
First the marks for one question are found by dividing the maximum marks by the total questions. Your correct answers earn that many marks each, and each wrong answer loses that amount multiplied by the negative marking ratio. The final score is the marks earned minus the marks deducted.
What does a 1/4 negative marking ratio mean?
Each wrong answer loses one quarter of the marks for one question. If a question is worth 4 marks, a wrong answer costs 1 mark.
Can my final score be negative?
Yes. If the marks deducted for wrong answers are more than the marks earned for correct answers, the final score is shown as a negative number.
What about questions I did not attempt?
Unattempted questions score zero. They add no marks and lose none, so only attempted questions affect your score.
Does the tool save my numbers?
No. Everything you enter stays in your browser and is never uploaded, saved or shared.
